Nathan R. Jones

Nathan R. Jones concentrates his practice on complex commercial litigation and municipal, tax certiorari, tax exemption and land use litigation and investigations. Mr. Jones has delivered significant victories for clients in complex cases requiring intense analytical work, including: an appellate victory granting tax exemption for a large Long Island not-for-profit organization; a favorable settlement after a successful summary judgment motion in a twenty-year-long estate dispute; defeating a technicality-driven motion to dismiss in a tax certiorari case for a Fortune 500 client with implications for properties throughout the state; several favorable judgments following civil trials; several amicus curiae motions granted at the New York Court of Appeals on cases involving important tax certiorari issues; and significant damages and attorney’s fees awards for clients.

He has also built on his tax exemption experience to develop a niche practice, the tax-exempt leasehold condominium group, with partner Judy L. Simoncic. The group represents hospitals and other not-for-profit entities seeking tax-exempt status via creation of commercial leasehold condominiums.

Mr. Jones joined the firm in 2012. Previously, he was a litigation associate at Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP, where he served multiple large national and international clients in matters including securities law, contract interpretation, corporate governance, bankruptcy litigation, antitrust investigations, and white-collar crime. Mr. Jones also worked as a special assistant district attorney in the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, where he participated in several jury trials, and as a law clerk to the Office of the General Counsel of Washington University in St. Louis.

He has appeared frequently in, and argued before, the state trial and appellate courts and the federal courts of New York and worked on matters before other courts around the country, including the Delaware Chancery Court and the Eastern District of Louisiana. He has been selected to the Super Lawyers New York Metro Rising Stars lists (Business Litigation) since 2014.
