The
Firm has a solid reputation for successfully representing

Jeffrey D. Forchelli is the founder
and managing partner of the Firm. His extensive practice
concentrates on complex real estate and land use matters.
He has served on the boards of many organizations, both
charitable and governmental, and is currently a Trustee
of Brooklyn Law School and a Trustee and Treasurer of the
Board of Wagner College. Mr. Forchelli is also a Vice Chairman
of the Nassau County Republican Committee. Forchelli was
selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Law,and
he is consistently included on the “Who’s Who
in Law” listing
by Long Island Business News. He was also selected for New York
Super Lawyers in 2007 & 2009.
Terence E. Smolev leads the Firm’s tax, trusts and estates
department. Mr. Smolev has been an adjunct professor at Hofstra University
Schools of Business and Law. He has edited tax-related professional texts,
authored articles for The New York Law Journal and
has served as an expert source for a number of Newsday articles.
His chapter titled, ‘Estate
Planning Client Strategies,’ has been published in Inside the Minds:
Estate Planning Client Strategies. Smolev has been
listed in Long
Island Business News’ “Who’s Who in Tax Law,” Who’s
Who in America’ and ‘Who’s Who in American Law,’ andwasalso
selected for inclusion in New York Super Lawyers in
2009. Most recently, he was an honoree of the 2010 Care
on the Fairways event by the Alzheimer
Foundation of America (AFA).
Head
of the Firm’s tax certiorari department, John
V. Terrana has obtained millions of dollars
in real estate tax refunds and savings for clients, including
national and regional owners and tenants of all types
of commercial and residential property. He was recently
appointed Co-Chair of The
Suffolk County Bar Association’s Condemnation & Tax
Certiorari Committee. Terrana is a frequent
writer and speaker on tax certiorari issues and has been
listed in Long Island Business News “Who’s
Who in Tax Certiorari Law” andwasalso selected
for inclusion in New York Super Lawyers in 2009.
Partner Donald
Jay Schwartz has developed
an expertise in all aspects of litigation, involving such
diverse areas as real estate, business contracts, corporate,
partnership, commercial landlord and tenant, employer and
employee rights, insurance law and personal injury. Mr.
Schwartz handled the landmark case of Mostow v. State
Farm Insurance Company (88 N.Y.2d 321) from the initial
arbitration award through his successful argument in New
York’s highest court, the Court of Appeals. The
case was responsible for changing the law in New York with
regard to the interpretation of underinsurance clauses
in insurance contracts. Mr. Schwartz also manages
all aspects of the Firm's litigation practice. Mr. Schwartz
serves on the Board of Directors of the Transplant Recipients
International Organization (TRIO). He was the recipient
of the Court Officer's Benevolent Association of Nassau
County's Jurisperitus Award. Mr. Schwartz has been listed
in Long Island Business News’s Who’s
Who in Litigation Law 2007 & 2008.
Daniel P. Deegan heads
up the firm’s Industrial
Development Agency (IDA), Municipal Incentives
and Government Relations practices, with particular emphasis
on facilitating and implementing responsible real estate
development projects. He specializes in Real Estate Development
Law, Zoning Law, Municipal Incentives/IDA Law, and Government
Relations/Municipal Law. Mr. Deegan is on the Board
of the New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV)
and is Vice Chairman of the Long Island Chapter for Nassau
County. He has served as President of the Glen Cove Rotary.
He is also a member of the Commercial Industrial Brokers
Society of Long Island (CIBS) and is a frequent lecturer
to trade groups and others on the law and practice relating
to Economic Development Incentives and Industrial Development
Agencies. His article on the Benefits of IDA was recently
published in the New York Real Estate Journal.
Barbara Shaheen Alesi concentrates her
practice in corporate and commercial matters, including
mergers and acquisitions, commercial real estate transactions,
private placements of securities and mortgage and asset-based
financing. She has served as Chair of the North Shore Animal
League America President’s Advisory Board and as
a member of the Advisory Board of Chicago Title Insurance
Company. Ms. Alesi has served as an Executive Board member
of the National Association of Women Business Owners-LI
Chapter and on the membership committee of the Executive
Women’s Golf Association, Long Island Chapter. She
has been recognized in many Long Island Business News’ listing
including Top 50 Most Influential Women in Business (2001), Who’s
Who in Women in Professional Services (2007), Who’s
Who in Corporate Law (2009). Most recently, she
was an honoree of the 2010 Annual Golf Classic event
by the Education & Assistance
Corp. (EAC).
James P. O’Brien represents
employers in all areas of labor and employment law. He has
litigated cases in federal and New York state courts, and
before various administrative agencies including the Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission, the New York State Division
of Human Rights, the New York City Commission on Human
Rights, the United States Department of Labor and the New
York State Department of Labor. Mr. O’Brien
regularly provides counseling to clients on a variety of
employment law subjects, including termination decisions,
managing employee absences, wage and hour issues and the
obligation to accommodate disabled employees. In addition,
Mr. O’Brien has developed particular experience in
representing educational institutions with respect to employment
matters, including claims of discrimination, breach of
contract and failure to follow institutional policies,
as well as claims asserted by students. He is a member
of the National Association of College and University Attorneys
and is Select Counsel in New York for United Educators
Insurance.
Christopher G. Gegwich concentrates
his practice in the areas of labor and employment law.
Mr. Gegwich has extensive experience defending management
clients in a wide variety of labor and employment litigation
matters in federal and state courts, as well as before
a variety of administrative governmental agencies, such
as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the
New York State Division of Human Rights. He has successfully
represented employers in litigation matters, including
arbitrations and trials in both state and federal court,
involving claims of breach of employment contracts, trade
secret and non-compete matters, harassment, discrimination,
whistleblower activities and retaliation. He is a frequent
speaker on a variety of labor and employment topics at
continuing legal education seminars and other related conferences. Mr. Gegwich
has spoken extensively on such topics as social media in
the workplace, accommodation issues under the Americans with
Disabilities Act and the enforceability of restrictive covenants.
